What kind of light sources should I use for my healthcare industry signage?
Just when you think you’ve made all of the important decisions regarding signage for your hospital, doctor’s office, immediate care facility, or nursing and rehabilitation center, someone asks, “What kind of light source would you like to use?” Hang in there, because this is one of the most important decisions you have to make! Your light source directly impacts your future energy costs and the cost of maintaining your new signage. When it comes to large outdoor signs, you can sometimes go with fluorescent bulbs, but two other choices are neon and LED (light emitting diode) light sources. We must confess that we have a favorite – the LED! LEDs cost more upfront, but we think they’re the best choice you can make for the long haul. Let us tell you why.
Should I use LED or neon for outdoor healthcare signage?
Neon tubes have been the lit-signage standard for decades, but LEDs are an up and coming competitor, and we think they’re worth the investment. When it comes to illuminating large outdoor signage, LEDs use up to 70% less energy than neon, and still come in a variety of colors. LED signage may cost more upfront, but over the long run, it will save you money on energy costs, as well as maintenance.
If that’s not enough to convince you, consider that neon tubes produce heat, and are made of glass, so they can produce wear and tear on your signage, are prone to breaking and can be tricky to install. LED lighting can be installed in a lot less time than neon lighting, and LEDs do not produce hotspots, so they’re 100% safe to use. LED lighting is also brighter than neon and best in its class for producing intense, “directional” light. Directional light means that a beam of focused light is produced from each of the tiny bulbs in the flexible LED tube, as opposed to “scattered” light that other sources create. An LED sign will cut through the dark like a floodlight and be visible from much farther away than other light sources.
