Why does color matter in healthcare signage?

When we’re getting dressed for an important event, we all know that good color combinations make a huge difference in how we look and how we’re “read” by others. Did you also know that color combinations affect the readability of your signage?

Legibility requires the right level of contrast between the background color and the color of the text. If there’s not enough contrast, your sign will be hard to read. Choosing the right typeface and the appropriate size for your text is also crucial for readability.

Color coding: Louder than words

It’s important to choose your words with care, but the right color combinations can do a lot more than make your words stand out. Color is frequently easier to remember than text or numbers, and a color scheme for your signage can help your patients and visitors find their way around, even if they don’t understand the words on your signs. Ever forget where you left your car in the parking garage? Is it easier to remember level D3, or “orange”? When you’re driving up to a hospital in a panic on a dark and rainy night, surely red is more likely to mean “Emergency Room” than blue or green, right? In contrast, do you want your recovery room signage done in warning-red, or a more comforting color, like calming blue?
